Welcome to Sumner Re Treat Luxury Apartments, Christchurch, New Zealand

What a wonderful place to stay, we just stayed the one night as we had a wedding in Sumner, wish we had had more time to use all facilities. Full sized apartment, wirh everything you would need for short or long stay, was more than we expected, its like a home away from home, will definitely be booking again to stay.

Retreat’s friendly owners have created a superb suit of accommodation units. Their attention to detail has been superb and is of the highest quality. The location within Sumner village is perfect, close to the beach and with great restaurants within a few minutes walk. I stay regularly at Retreat and always look forward to coming back.

My husband, daughter and I had booked into Sumner Re Treat for our first overnight stop in South Island following our flight from Melbourne to Christchurch and what a treat it turned out to be! We were warmly greeted by Chris (the owner) and shown up to our luxury apartment (number 2) on the first floor – light, airy, spotless and spacious with modern,classy decor and fitments with a large open-plan lounge/diner and kitchen area (with a complimentary bottle of red wine which we greatly enjoyed!).There was a lovely covered outdoor balcony and decking area to the apartment and the two bedrooms were spacious with extremely comfortable king-size beds and plenty of wardrobe space. The bathrooms were immaculate and well-stocked with quality toiletries, flannels and towels. The apartment block also had a roof-top terrace and swimming pool which alas we had no time to utilize. Parking was easy and secure in the private underground car park and WiFi was free. The apartment block is situated close to the beach at Sumner (a short drive from Christchurch centre) with plenty of shops and eateries nearby and also a cinema within walking distance.We felt that the apartment had exceeded our expectations and indeed spoilt us by setting the bar so high for the other accommodation we had booked for the rest of our 3,000mile road trip! We were most happy that we had booked to stay here in a further 3+ weeks time for our last night in South Island before returning to Melbourne!

We landed in Christchurch and drove to our first NZ stay for three nights at Sumner Re Treat, and it was a treat! The owner Chris greeted us and showed us to our two bedroom, two bathroom apartment. Everything was spotless and very modern and actually spoilt us for all the places we stayed in afterwards. There was even a bottle of wine for us! We were shown our secure parking space under the building and there was a lift from the garage area to the other floors. We were rather jet lagged and the weather was dull that day, so we just chilled out and walked by the sea and got some supplies from the supermarket round the corner. Everything we needed was within easy walking distance.
The next day we drove to Akaroa and had a wonderful day, enjoying amazing scenery, a boat trip to see Hectors dolphins, fur seals and one penguin! We had lunch, shopped in the sunshine and ate ice cream.
Chris the owner was very helpful and friendly. She even gave us an old blanket to cover our suitcases and my wheelchair, so they’d be hidden from view.
What a great start to our brilliant holiday in NZ!

We stayed for a single night as we began our South Island holiday and were not disappointed. This 2 bedroom apartment, beautifully presented with all amenities for a short or longer stay. Centrally located in Sumner with a few minutes walk to the beach, shops and supermarket.
Checkin was easy and nothing was too much trouble with Mel converting a king bed to two singles at short notice. The apartment included complimentary breakfast and a handy under building carspace.

The Sumner Re Treat offers excellent accommodations near the beach. The owner provides personalized attention to each guest and is very professional.

Our two-bedroom, two-bath room was spacious, clean and comfortable. We even received “surprise” baked goods in our room! The location is within steps of the beach, shops and restaurants.

Book early to enjoy this special place!

We booked a two-bedroom apartment for three nights.The apartment was great and everything worked well and was fully supplied with kitchen equipment and cutlery etc (it only lacked microwave dishes). The check-in/out was friendly and fast, Great location and 3 minutes walk to the beach and surrounded by good quality restaurants. Our two kids loved the pool.

Based on our excellent stay I would highly recommend it to anybody looking for a very nice apartment.

We stayed in a studio apartment which had all the amenities you could want. The owners, Chris and Roydon, were amazing hosts to this beautiful facility. We had use of a pool and hot tub overlooking a phenomenal view over the ocean. Only 4 apartments so very quiet and secure. Underground parking, security system to enter building. Had use of bicycles that were high end and a bicycle path along the ocean. Chris even made us homemade scones and finished doing our laundry and put it in our room for when we returned from our days outing. We felt like we were visiting friends and were sad to leave. I would not stay anywhere else in the Christchurch area.
Only regret was that it was not longer.

We highly recommend Sumer Re Treat. We stayed here for only 3 nights, but felt really at home with Chris from the moment she picked us up from the airport.
She was really helpful in getting around and we enjoyed the home-made scones we got as an friendly welcome.
The apartment is clean and nicely decorated.
We’d love to return to this place if we are in Christchurch again!

Due to a good bus service, you don’t need a car to see a lot of Christchurch. (Bus stop in front of the building.)
Several good restaurants nearby, you don’t have to prepare your own meals if you don’t want to 😉

This is probably the best equipped apartment we have stayed in on all our travels.
The kitchen, laundry, lounge, bedroom everything was well equipped and maintained, even garage parking. It would have been great if there was a bath as well.
Unfortunately we only had one night at Sumner Re Treat.
Highly recommend, if you are visiting Christchurch stay at Sumner Re Treat!

I recently booked the Sumner Retreat for my family and I to stay in the night before my wedding, and for my family to also stay in the night after the wedding.
The Sumner Retreat exceeded my expectations! The decor was modern and fresh. The kitchen and living area was huge and it also flowed out to a small outdoor patio area. The bedrooms were a good size with each having their own bathrooms but, most importantly, the accomodation was immaculate and clean!
The rooftop pool and view (which lent it’s hand to some spectacular wedding photo’s) was the icing on the cake. Walking distance to everything in Sumner, Sumner Retreat is excellently located while still retaining privacy. Chris the owner was always ready to help and nothing asked was ever a problem.
I am so very grateful for the amazing wedding weekend we had at Sumner Retreat.

We stayed at Sumner Re Treat for 3 nights and have only positive things to say.

Sumner is a lovely seaside village out of Christchurch. We felt like we were on a little seaside holiday, taking long walks along the beach, reading books and eating gelato! Then in the evening enjoying dinner at a local restaurant and watching a movie at the boutique cinema.

We went into the city one day but really there is no need to leave the village – everything you need is right there. The bus is almost right outside taking you into the city ($3.50) and to the airport ($8).

We stayed in Apartment 2 which was well appointed, spacious, quiet and relaxing. Free wifi was a bonus for the teenager 🙂

There is a wee bit of earthquake damage visible in the apartment (above the door frames etc) due to ongoing battles with insurance/EQC but nothing structural.

The complimentary continental breakfast items and bottle of wine were a lovely welcoming surprise.

The pool on the rooftop was great to cool off on a hot day. As there are only a few apartments in the complex we had it all to ourselves.

Jane, the temporary manager, was a wonderfully pleasant host.

We definitely recommend Sumner Re Treat and will be returning again.

Upon walking in our two bedroom apartment we decided to stay in, had a spa and relaxed in our beautiful bedroom. Great privacy from the other room as it is sectioned off with it’s own bathroom with a rain shower. Everything was thought of the apt having all utensils, plastic wine glasses for the spa and spa towels. Highly recommended this place and Chris (lady) very nice and happy to have a chat and recommendations. We wished we had stayed longer.

Sumner Retreat is exactly that.
Chris is extremely helpful, the apartments are very modern, clean and comfortable.
For a holiday by the beach, a weekend away or just because, Sumner Retreat is a great place to stay.
We enjoy each time we stayed here.

What a great place to stay. We came to visit family who live nearby and are doing house renovations- and the studio apartment at Sumner Retreat was just fantastic. It’s position in Sumner within one minutes walk to super restaurants and cafés, and great beach walks.
We had a car and parking was no problem. Also an easy drive to the city and to hiking tracks.
Contemporary, spotless, well equipped, warm and cosy during a wintery week.
The studio was perfect, with free wiifi . TV and a very well appointed kitchen with every little detail taken care of – no danger of running out of coffee, tea jam etc!!
A very comfortable bed and super shower room.

We certainly recommended Sumner Retreat and we are staying there again in a couple of weeks before flying back to UK.

We visited Christchurch during the day and had booked Sumner based on reviews. We were not disappointed, 15 minutes drive out of town to the very nice resort of Sumner. The retreat has been built by the owners with 3 apartments, 1 studio and the owners own apartment, all accessed by lift. Added to this is a small pool and hot tub and a lovely roof top area with great views. The studio is ideal for a couple and we would have happily stayed longer than the one night we had booked.
Around the corner were at least 5 different restaurants- we enjoyed a meal at The Village Inn.
Overall a great place to stay.

We stayed here last night and it was lovely. The small touches like the wine and biscuits and late check out we asked for we’re really appreciated. The location was perfect, right in the middle of everything and a stones throw to the beach. We loved the personal feel of the place and although the weather was rubbish I can imagine it being even better with nice weather. The pool and hot tub were great and they do need a little bit of TLC but after reading the information pack provided we appreciated that they were working hard to continue to renovate the place. Would definitely recommend staying here and we will be back. Thank you!

Arrived late hence not able to enjoy the place fully but nevertheless it is a quality accommodation with friendly and helpful host. The room is spacious with cooking and laundry facilities and each unit comes with a secure onsite carpark. Highly recommended.

We arrived in Sumner beach at Christchurch looking for accommodation, after having to depart other accommodation south of Christchurch which did not live up to expectations. To be honest, we had low expectations after a disappointing day. This place and location proved to be the oasis in the desert. We were shown to a very large, immaculate and extraordinarily well appointed 1 bedroom apartment. We stayed 2 nights and would have stayed longer but for other accommodation bookings. If I ever return to Christchurch I will stay at this apartment. At well below $200 per night, this apartment is fantastic value.

We spent 12 days in NZ, it’s a shame our last night was at Sumner as we would have loved to extend our stay, we cannot fault anything about this place, perfect beautiful rooms that are clean and have the best facilities we came across in our time there, the price was very reasonable and the service was nothing short of fantastic. Can’t wait to visit sumner re treat again. Thank you for having us.

Luxury does not fully describe. What a treat awaited us with bottle of wine and lovely continental breakfast.
Spacious living areas, 2 bathrooms and 2 large bedrooms both opening out to balcony. Close to amazing eatery’s in the heart of Sumner, close to the beach and really nice shopping. Fantastic for families. When we visit Christchurch again, this will be the only place we stay. Very accommodating and friendly hosts.

The term luxury is used freely to describe a lot of New Zealand accommodation any from our two week experience in the south island most are not luxurious BUT the Sumner Re Treat IS true luxury.

We were greeted in a friendly manner and said we were looking for a room for the night. We were immediately shown the only room available before we booked in and we could not have been happier. Thankfully we stayed two nights here and enjoyed this lovely beachside suburb of Christchurch.

The apartment is overall a large luxurious one, it has a separate lounge, a full kitchen, a separate bedroom a lovely deck and all the mod cons including decent wine glasses. We utilised the in built laundry to catch up on our washing. Undercover parking downstairs.

Its located near the beach and some good restaurants. Easy walking to everything including the beach in this small but delightful place. would I stay here again? YES.
